Strategic Communication Manager/ Coordinator, Development Dialogue Asia


About the Organization
Development Dialogue Asia (DDA) is a strategic communications initiative that works to preserve tropical forests, to protect the rights of Indigenous communities, and to advance sustainable land use as a climate change solution. Our highly skilled team of professionals are trained experts in the areas of communication strategy, digital and print media, influencers, data science, and campaigns. Team members have backgrounds in journalism, civil society organizations, digital agencies, PR firms, and international and multilateral organizations. Development Dialogue Asia acts as part of an international network of communications professionals and works closely with top digital agencies, mission-driven PR firms, and allied teams in other countries.


We work in partnership with civil society organizations (CSOs), the academia, and cultural and philanthropic organizations in Indonesia to create communication strategies that strengthen initiatives aimed at our key topics mentioned above. Our core capacities include:

  • Research: social listening, audience segmentation, media analysis, narrative mapping, and message testing.
  • Media: media relations advice and amplification of content.
  • Influencers: media training for experts and spokespeople; partnerships with celebrities and digital influencers.
  • Digital communication: strategies for social media, audience orientation and network analysis.
  • Strategic response: crisis management and combating trolling, fake news and disinformation.
  • We do not support candidates or political parties, nor do we engage in elections or political lobbying. 


About the Role of Strategic Communication Manager / Coordinator

The
manager (or coordinator) selected for the position will primarily focus on developing public engagement strategies by conducting creative campaigns that encourage collaboration between Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), expert messengers, celebrities, influencers, content creators, communities and media. They will be responsible for engaging influencers and content creators in crafting compelling, accessible messages around climate change, environment, community rights, sustainable economic development, energy, and other related topics, so it will be build understanding and mobilize support for priority audiences on environmental issues.

 

They will engage DDA's civil society partners in collaborating with multi-parties, creative content strategies, implementing partnerships, knowledge sharing and collective campaigning. The ideal candidate will bring experience and expertise in three complementary areas working in or with: 

  • PR, agency, or other capacities with influencers and content creators
  • Journalism, particularly cultural and lifestyle media, and 
  • Civil society on environment-related issues. 

The top candidates for this role will bring an established network of relationships with top influencers as well as a fluent knowledge of climate and environmental issues.

 

The manager/coordinator will be an expert strategic thinker, good facilitator, amazing listener and a trend observer. They will have strong experience in managing communities of practices, analyzing communications needs and opportunities, providing strategic recommendations, and developing and delivering communications campaigns. They will be a collaborative, respectful, kind, competent and trustworthy team player. They will be highly effective at project and time management in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment, able to create, plan, implement and report.

 

The manager/coordinator will engage directly with celebrities, influencers, content creators, expert spokespeople, academics, NGO leaders, PR firms, agencies, and communities. A successful manager/coordinator will deeply listen to and understand partners' challenges and opportunities, connect with the DDA team where needed, and help partners design and deliver on solutions. They will be a trusted communication senior advisor to NGO comms professionals, as well as ready to ‘roll up their sleeves to do the work. They will be committed to effective testing and learning processes, ready and excited to discover what’s not working and adjust the course. This person will report to DDA's director.

Key Responsibilities 
Strategic Communication Manager/ Coordinator, you will be responsible for:

  • Building relationships with and actively engaging celebrities, influencers, content creators, experts, academics, spokespeople, NGO leaders, and influencer agencies.
  • Building relationships with parties from cultural and lifestyle sectors, and developing strategies on how they can support climate and land-use issues. 
  • Establishing partnerships with multi-parties to promote key narratives of climate and land-use issues. 
  • Developing strategies for public engagement by conducting collaboration between NGOs, influencers, and media in creating creative content. Monitoring the process and reporting with analysis and lessons learned. 
  • Developing strategies, implementing, monitoring and reporting collective campaigns that involve multi-parties. 
  • Developing strategies for knowledge-building with cultural and lifestyle influencers about climate and land-use issues. 
  • Developing strategies and connecting the creative content output to the media.
  • Facilitating the collaboration between NGOs in promoting key narratives. 
  • Manage, track and report on contracts with stakeholders.
  • Setting up and managing knowledge sharing and learning activities with and for our partners, including capacity building and audience-driven collaborative efforts to enhance their knowledge of strategic communications focused on our key topics.
  • Setting up and managing key engagement activities such as webinars, workshops and group discussions where our partners and the DDA team can exchange knowledge and experience. 
  • Providing audience-driven strategic communications recommendations to support the organizations, based on thoughtful analysis.
  • Working alongside the Director and the rest of the team in communications strategy development and implementation planning. Engaging with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to inform and be informed and to be able to do the work.


Key Competencies

Essential:

  • A personal network of high trust relationships with celebrities, cultural and lifestyle influencers and content creators.
  • Knowledge about climate, environment, and forest protection issues 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and sound judgment in Bahasa Indonesia and strong skills in English.
  • Strong self-direction and ability to work effectively with Indonesian partners in person as well as part of a virtual organization. Must be flexible to work with colleagues across Indonesia, and in time zones from San Francisco to Jakarta.
  • Excellent project management skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Experience designing and delivering with capacity building and training activities. 
  • Leading collaborative communications strategy development and planning with civil society organizations, ideally based on data insights and with a focus on campaigns to inspire behaviour change. 
  • Management of multiple relationships in complex environments, establishing trusting relationships.
  • Creation and maintenance of internal and external communication flows.
  • Implementation of constant, assertive and friendly communication.
  • Very good meeting facilitator, in person and for VC.
  • Coaching/support mindset (not dictatorial in style).
  • Teamwork, collaboration, integration. 
  • 8-10 years of experience working in related fields. 

 

Desirable:

  • Excellent written and oral skills in English. Fluency in other languages such as Mandarin. 
  • Strong, broad network of relationships with Indonesian environment NGOs and Indigenous organizations.
  • Savvy in sustainable economic development, environment conservation, climate change, and indigenous community rights.

Location

Please note that this is a full-time (40h) remote position within Indonesia, with most of our team based in Jakarta or Bandung Exceptional Indonesian candidates working from outside of Indonesia may be considered. Candidates based in or with deep experience working in Kalimantan, Sumatra, and/or Eastern Indonesia are particularly welcomed to apply. A stable, consistent internet connection is required.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience
